Back up of Sewer and Drain Coverage? Aren’t I already covered??

What is this coverage? This is an endorsement you can add to your homeowner’s insurance policy. It allows you to have coverage for any sewer/water leaks into your home, i.e. sewer back up, sump pump failure, water main failure.

Isn’t that all bundled in my Homeowner’s coverage? No, it is not included and neither are floods (another important topic). It’s important to know that this is an endorsement you would add on to your home policy.

Is this flood insurance? This is not flood insurance. Flood insurance is a totally separate coverage.

How much is it? You would be surprised at how inexpensive it can be. It ranges from $40-$50 per year on average.

Do I need it? Not everyone needs this coverage of course. Insurance is not a one size fits all sort of thing. See the “3 Causes of Sewer Backup” below to see if it’s a good fit for you.

3 Causes of Sewer Backup

1. Blockages due to Tree Roots: Shrubs and tree roots seeking moisture can burrow their way into sewer lines! They will seek out any cracks while on the hunt for water. A minimal crack can grow with the pressure of a root pushing on it. This can cause severe damage to those lines. Don’t wait until it’s too late, and reach out to a plumber. Please note that at times it can be a city tree responsible (partially or fully) for the damage. A Plumber can assist in that determination and point you in the right direction for the next steps that need to be taken for repairs.

2. Sanitary Main: A blockage can occur in a city main sewer drain. If the city is unaware of the blockage, i.e. it’s not detected, the sewage can back up into your home! Yes, I just said that raw sewage could enter your home! Don’t fret, most times you will get a fair notice so you should have time to contact a plumber for assistance.

3. Water in your Basement: This is a big issue in the Mid-West. I wasn’t used to any water issues since I was born and raised in Arizona. Upon moving to Missouri, I realized that this is a serious issue! If you live in the Mid-West, east coast, or anywhere with a basement, this section is dedicated to you. As we all know it can rain for days at a time. Not only do we get tired of it, so does the ground. The ground is constantly trying to soak up all that rain water, and at times, it just can’t. The water ends up just sitting on top of the grass. In many cases, what occurs is that water compresses the soil and it settles adjacent to the house. If not corrected, it can lead to water entering your home. The water will follow your house lines, find a crack, and make it inside the basement. The water can most definitely cause detriotation of your cement floor/basement walls, etc. It will compromise any water proofing measures you have in place. So if you see water once in your home, it could mean this is just a first of many times.

Remember none of these items are covered by your standard home policy. One must add the extra endorsement to be covered. It can really pay for itself if something were to happen. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

  1. I would think that tree roots would be covered by the insurance. You need to make sure to get those roots cleared because it will cause a backup. It happened to me this past winter.
